STDs: Separating Fact from Fiction for Escorts and Hobbyists
One of the most common criticisms leveraged at prostitution is that it causes the spread of STDs. If I had $5 for every time I heard this line, I would be a very rich man. But studies conducted on the prostitution industry actually found that this statement is more myth than fact. In reality, the chances of you acquiring an STD from an escort, or an escort acquiring an STD from you, is just the same as the general population. In other words, the chances of you getting an STD from an escort is equal to the chances you will get it from having a one night stand with a stranger you meet at a night club.
I've found that many escorts are educated, and play it safe when it comes to sex. While most people not familiar with the prostitution industry assume that prostitutes need to be educated on the use of protection, again, this is a myth. Most escorts are smart enough to realize that contracting an STD potentially means that they will be out of business, and they can have health problems leading up to death. Therefore, most escorts are quick to demand that their clients use condoms in most circumstances.
It should also be emphasized that certain sexual practices puts you at a higher risk of contracting various types of STDs. For example, while giving bare back blow jobs does put you at risk of getting herpes, hepatitis, or even AIDs, the fact of the matter is that the risk is far lower than that of vaginal or anal sex. Oral sex is particularly risky if one partner has gums which bleed, or when they have cuts in their mouth. However, anal sex is far more dangerous due to micro organisms that are found near the rectum, and there are a large number of diseases that can be contracted because of it, such as anal cancer, HPV, and Hepatitis C.
However, it must be emphasized that contrary to popular belief, the risk for contracting any of these diseases by hiring an escort is not higher than the overall population in general. Think about it. Many people today, especially in Western countries, have multiple sex partners. It is impossible that their risk for STD transmission would be lower than the escort business, which also has multiple sex partners. The concept of STDs in prostitution has been highly overrated.
