The D.C. Madam: The Story of Deborah Jeane Palfrey
As we head out of 2007 and make our way into 2008, some will remember 2007 as the year of political sex scandals. Perhaps the most prominent sex scandal of this year is the one involving Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the "DC Madam." Palfrey, who ran the escort agency known as Pamela Martin and Associates for approximately 13 years, was charged for pimping and operating a prostitution house. However, beneath the surface is a story of betrayal, and most importantly, double standards.
To us here at HER, Palfrey is a victim, not a criminal. Like the escort business in general, we are truly libertarians at heart, and believe that the government should never interfere with the escort business. Unlike other crimes, the escort business does not have a victim. Two parties agree to sex for the exchange of money. It is just like any other business transaction. The Deborah Jeane Palfrey case is profound, not just because of the media blitz which surrounded it, but because the case clearly shows that the United States is losing the freedoms that we so dearly cherish.
Here you have a woman who provided an honest service to politicians in Washington D.C. Then, the politicians suddenly turned on her, and had her charged for a service that THEY used. The last time I checked, if the buying and selling of sex is illegal, why is it that only Palfrey was charged? Was Randall L. Tobias charged? No. Was U.S. Senator David Vitter charged? Absolutely not. Both men admitted that they used the service, which is supposed to be a violation of the law. So why is it that only Palfrey was charged?
Palfrey was charged because we live in a country where politicians are no longer held accountable for their actions. We here at HER think that prostitution should never be prohibited, but if you're going to arrest the owner of an escort agency, and some of her clients admit they were involved, why not charge them as well? What this case clearly shows is that many powerful people in the U.S., most notably politicians, are above the law.
It is no real secret that politicans are some of the most prominent clients of escorts and escort services. In fact, Washington D.C. is a major hub for escorts. But despite this, only the escorts and owners of escort agencies get arrested and prosecuted. In some cases, agency owners have been sentenced to as much as three years in prison(read the Jody Gibson story here:).
One thing that those who read this article had better understand is that the Deborah Jeane Palfrey case is bigger than either her, or the politicians in Washington. It is the tell tell sign of a country in which politicians are above the law. In a country like this, freedom itself is in danger.
